Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
The Gilman Scholarship Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide. The program aims to encourage students to choose non-traditional study and intern destinations, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Students who plan to study a critical language abroad are eligible to receive Gilman’s Critical Need Language Award.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides grants to recent graduates, Master’s and doctoral candidates, and young professionals for individually designed study or research projects and for English Teaching Assistantships. The Fulbright Critical Language Enhancement Award provides supplemental funding to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for grantees to receive between three and six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. This opportunity is available for select languages.
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y), sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. NSLI-Y aims to provide opportunities to American youth that will spark a lifetime interest in language learning. Previous language study is not required, and language learners of all levels are encouraged to apply. Languages offered include Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian, and Turkish.
