The CLS Program offers courses designed to develop students’ listening,
reading, speaking, spoken interaction, and writing skills. Students
will receive a minimum of 20 hours per week of formal classroom instruction.
Participants will also be required to take part in organized semi-formal
and informal learning activities that will promote interaction with
the host community and culture. These activities will support the formal
classroom instruction. The curriculum will be rigorous and diversified,
strategically embracing the diglossic nature of the Arabic language
(standard/dialects) that are essential for developing advanced proficiency
in this language. The curriculum will include innovative approaches
to language learning and will incorporate technology-based instructional
materials in order to promote faster language acquisition in a collaborative
and engaging environment. Students may be required to attend individual
or group tutorials as needed and will participate in a variety of cultural
enrichment lectures and activities.
All components of the CLS Program have been developed as part of
the language acquisition process. CLS participants are required to attend
all program components, including, but not limited to, language instruction
(formal/informal), cultural activities, and excursions. Absences will
only be excused for medical or other approved reasons.

The American School in Tangier (AST) is a large campus about a fifteen
minute walk from downtown Tangier and the medina (old city). During
the school year, AST provides English language instruction and curriculum
for Moroccan and expatriate K-12 students. It is a beautiful and restful
location for intensive language study, situated near a popular neighborhood
replete with a lovely vegetable market, local shops of all stripes,
and a public park. AST has two dorms, classrooms, a large soccer field,
volleyball court, and outdoor pool for student use. It is gated and
has 24-hour security guards for campus protection and assistance. The
study hall in the school residency is equipped with wireless internet
access which will enable students to access email from their own laptops
and the program website where curriculum information will be posted.
